The above lands close Lembar harbor and the southwest peninsula
With several enticing offshore islands, the southwest peninsula is an exciting proposition for those who like their travel rough. This area is arid and scrubby, with only a few villages, whose sparse population makes its living from the sea. Lembar, the gateway to the peninsula and the port for Bali, is 22km south of Mataram. Approaching by boat from Bali, the entrance to the rugged harbor is spectacular, but the village itself insignificant. As the crow flies it's around 30km from Lembar to Bangko Bangko at the tip of the peninsula; by road, however, it's a rutted, dusty and far more tortuous journey following the north coast. The road is only black-topped to Sekotong, after which it deteriorates badly and you'll need a powerful bike or jeep. Most of the beaches on the way are pure white and glorious: Tawun is especially lovely. You'll find accommodation at Sekotong Indah Beach Cottages, 25km from Lembar, which have a small restaurant attached and a choice of rooms or cottages - you can also rent a boat to cross the Gili Nanggu from here, to find a boat out to the islands from Lembar, head straight through the car park in the main port and talk to the skippers in the warung just on the shore expect to pay around Rp 40,000 for a trip out to Gili Nanggu.. Pelangan has good snorkeling just offshore and a public boat runs to Gili Gede, and at Labuhan Poh there's a pearl-farming operation.
